Helpful Mowing Tips
Here are some valuable tips for keeping your lawn healthy and attractive:
- Mow St. Augustine grass when it reaches 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 inches in height.
- Remove no more than 1/3 of the grass blade's length at one cutting. Mowing high permits a longer grass blade thus more surface area for sunlight absorption. It also discourages weed growth.
- Alternating your direction with each cutting helps ensure a more even cut.
- Leaving grass clippings on the lawn provides natural nutrients, helps retain moisture, and discourages weed growth.
- To avoid excess wear on your mower, do not cut wet grass. Wet grass is prone to clumping on the lawn which can encourage the spread of disease.
- Keep your mower blade sharp. Dull blades chop the grass, leaving jagged, browning tips.
- Keep your lawnmower in good operating condition changing the oil at least once each mowing season, changing the spark plug as needed, use fresh gas, clean air filter regularly and regularly remove grass, dirt and debris from the surface.
Grass Cycling / Mulch Mowing
Grass cycling means leaving clippings on the lawn to feed the soil. Grass cycling saves time, eliminates waste, and feeds your lawn. To reap the greatest benefit, it is best to use/purchase a quality mulching mower.
- For St. Augustine grass set cutting height at 3-3/4" to 4-1/4"
- Remember - do not remove more than 1/3 of grass length (1 inch max) at any one cutting
- To avoid clumping, do not mow wet grass
- Mow often (every 5 - 7 days during peak growing season)
- Grass Cycling adds natural, free fertilizer to your lawn so you can water and fertilize less often.
- Do not allow excessive thatch build up on the lawn
Lawn Watering 101
Contrary to popular belief, watering less can actually result in a healthier lawn. Too much watering can leave your lawn susceptible to pests and disease. Generally, a deep watering
(1 to 1.5 inches) once or twice a week is ideal. Frequent, light watering does not allow the water to reach the roots before evaporation.
- Irrigate early in the day - preferably before sunrise to minimize evaporation
- Check sprinkler heads regularly for damage or misdirection
- Keep spray zones clear of overgrowth or other obstacles
- Call a pro to address any problems early
